May21 Project: Day 40 -- June 29, 2011.
Wow, I guess God still has it in for all of us that got left behind. We have not been able to get a lot of information, no power, no radio, no internet for the last 2 days. I finally was able to get on line using a dial up modem and calling up to a number in Seattle. I suspect that everyone must have felt it.
Apparently the asteroid that was supposed to be a near miss, hit. The asteroid was discovered by the LINEAR near-Earth object discovery team in Socorro, New Mexico, just last week. From what I have been able to figure out, it must have hit somewhere in the Kentucky, but flattened everything for about 250 miles, and still have shock waves that were still at about 8.5 at 500 miles. Windows were breaking in New York, Cleveland, Chicago and Atlanta.
We still don’t know how bad it really was, but we are hearing about fires raging in cities 300-400 miles away. Hopefully we will get more information soon.
I even felt it here in California… Crazy. As you can imagine the power grid across the country has been disrupted. I’m going to look into setting up some type of solar charging system. I have two 8 watt pads I’ll have to report on how that works out.
Folks, hope your power is back on soon. Another Asteroid is due to buzz the Earth on November 8 this year.

May21 Project: Day 28
May21 Project: Day 28 – Friday June 17, 2011. (Posted June 26)
Well, at work yesterday it was announced that we were going to start having “furlough” days. Basically we all will start taking every Friday off. There is even talk of having some shutdowns.
Honestly, I’m not sure how long the high-tech industries are going to keep going. Like I said the other day, domestic flights are virtually nonexistent and no one is flying to Asia and Europe.
Mostly it’s the fact that phones and networks are failing, but it’s also the “flu” that has been raging across Eastern Europe. They say that it’s not so bad, but there are more and more deaths getting reported… and it’s actually sounding like some strange version of “mad cow”.
The Syrians have declared martial law, and started shooting more protestors. It’s almost as bad a Libya.
In fact fighting and virtual Civil War has broken out in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and Western Sahara, all the northern Africa countries. This has caused millions of refugees who are flooding into France, Spain and Italy. There are UN camps getting setup, but with all those folks packed in camps, it’s looking like a recipe for disaster.
It’s not that bad here, and we still don’t seem to have many reports of the “new Flu”, but that may be because all the towns and cities are hunkering down.

May21 Project: Day 25 – Tuesday June 14, 2011. (Posted June 26)
An interesting happened today. I ended up taking the day off from work. As you know the power has been on and off, and apparently while we were driving back from being stranded in Vegas, the power had been off most of the time. Well one of our neighbors, Jeff, my son Danny is friends with his kids, had a big deep freezer filled with a whole side of beef, and some other stuff. Well it started to melt, and he was panicking that it would all go bad…
So we had a big barbeque, and meat canning party. I now have about 40 quart and 30 pint jars of canned meat. Between the families in our court, we canned about 200 bottles. The rest we dried and smoked.
I’m glad we know and are friends with all our neighbors; it may be important in the future.

May21 Project: Day 24 - Monday June 13, 2011. (Posted June 26 -- Well I was finally able to get back on line. Mostly it’s been the power being on and off and the ISP we have has had problems. I’ll post some of the main stuff that has been going on.)
Well it’s been a while and a lot has happened. We did have some problems getting home. It took a few days to get a flight. So many flights were just being canceled. We finally got a flight to Wichita, got stuck there for a few days and then ended up getting stranded in Las Vegas, and had to BUY a car to finally get home. None of the Car rental companies would do a one way… so we bought a 1981 Town and Country station wagon for $500.
For all practical purposes the air lines have stopped commercial flights, and the only ones available are for Military or Government personnel. The State or federal government has not declared martial law, but it’s just a matter of time.
The good thing about having to drive from Nevada was I was able to stop at 4-5 Sporting goods stores and pick up a lot of ammo. It has just been scarce in California.
The drive was also an eye opener. As we got down toward LA before tuning up to the San Jose area, you started to see lots of cars and truck packed like the Beverly Hill Billies. I guess folks are starting to flee some of the big cities.

May21 Project: Day 16
May21 Project: Day 16
June 5, 2011. Sunday. 16 days later.
We decided to keep trying to live our lives normally, but it’s hard. We did fly to Galveston TX. for a week of sunshine. With all the weird rainy weather in CA, I thought it would be good to get away and see Cindy’s family and make sure they are prepared. It may be one of the last times we get to fly anywhere.
The eColi out break in Europe is starting to scare every one. They say it’s just a stomach bug, but there are rumors that it’s more than that. At the Airport security, not only were they doing the BodyScans, they were taking swab samples from the inside of our cheeks. I guess they are trying to see if the same bug is showing up here. Who know when all the international flights will be stopped.
Galveston is almost a ghost town, now that everyone is afraid of the weather, and now that Hurricane season has started. The Internet is completely inaccessible where we are staying, and no one can get any information.
It has been nice seeing family and make sure everyone is safe and prepared. I will be reviewing emergency preparedness procedures with Max, so he can make sure Dianna is safe. I’m not worried about Sue, because Timmy has a good head on his shoulders. Tomorrow we will be driving up of check on Bud and Eleanor, to make sure their new home is well stocked and defendable.
I hope we don’t have any problems getting back home. Stay safe.
